Kim Ng Hired By Miami Marlins, Making Her First Female General Manager In MLB History

Major League Baseball team, the Miami Marlins, hired Kim Ng to become the general manager of the organization, making her the first woman and first Asian American ever to have that role in MLB history.

Ng, 51, was promoted from her role as the Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations, a position that made her the only Asian American woman to have that rank in the sport.

“When I got into this business, it seemed unlikely a woman would lead a Major League team, but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals,” Ng said. “My goal is now to bring Championship baseball to Miami.”

Ng replaces former GM Michael Hill, who did not renew his contract. She is the fifth person to fill the role.

“We look forward to Kim bringing a wealth of knowledge and championship-level experience to the Miami Marlins,” said Derek Jeter, Miami Marlins CEO. “Her leadership of our baseball operations team will play a major role on our path toward sustained success.”

Ng started her career in baseball operations over 30 years ago as an intern. Her resume includes years of experience as the assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees, and working in the front office of the Chicago White Sox. Her recent promotion makes history as Ng becomes the first woman GM across all sports leagues in the U.S.

“I entered Major League Baseball as an intern and, after decades of determination, it is the honor of my career to lead the Miami Marlins as their next General Manager,” Ng said in a statement. “We are building for the long term in South Florida, developing a forward-thinking, collaborative, creative baseball operation made up of incredibly talented and dedicated staff who have, over the last few years, laid a great foundation for success.”
