Review: Doja Cat’s Sexy Sophomore Album ‘Hot Pink’ Is Both Nostalgic And Futuristic

Fans have excitedly watched the steady rise of up-and-coming talent Doja Cat for a while. There’s no doubt that her unique style and undeniable confidence is all too entertaining and eye catching to dismiss.

The Los Angeles artist has marked her territory with her sophomore album Hot Pink. The 12-track project, distributed by collaborators Kemosabe Records and RCA records, gives listeners a taste of Doja Cat’s ability to be versatile and experimental with her sound.

Her imprint is best described as a mixture of 1990s pop combined with 2040s R&B and hip hop. Both nostalgic and futuristic, Hot Pink is the perfect anthem playground for women empowerment, sex positivity and street language.

The “Say So” singer’s style is reminiscent of artists from the past, such as Deee-Lite who was known for the cult-classic party song “Groove Is In The Heart”. Doja Cat has the same appeal with the multi-dimensional visuals, vibrant colors and playful demeanor that she presents in her music videos.

Simultaneously, Hot Pink refuses to be put in a box. Jumping from genre to genre, Doja Cat marches to the beat of her own drum, literally. What’s the overall message of the album? Have fun.

Doja Cat’s delivery on “Cyber Sex”, “Won’t Bite” featuring Smino, “Talk Dirty” and “Addiction” set the foundation for the playful feeling that is rampant throughout the album. With ease, she goes from rapping to singing and rapping again.

Most of the songs on the project are standout tracks, but if forced to slim down the choices for the sake of radio play the standout tracks would be “Say So”, “Streets”, “Like That” featuring Gucci Mane and, of course, current single “Juicy” featuring Tyga.

Let’s call it what it is. The way of the music world today is that the more raunchy and vulgar one is, the better. This can be attributed to the amount of noise music lovers have to filter through before they find quality or valuable content. It’s nearly impossible to be visible on the forefront of the entertainment industry without shock value. Doja Cat doesn’t mind playing the role and you can see it in her visual content and hear it in her lyrics.

Listeners won’t get to know Doja Cat beyond her sexual desires or relationship needs on Hot Pink, but with the amount of talent she holds in her pinky, give her time. She’s just getting started. The future is bright for Doja Cat and The MouthSoap can’t wait until she unravels the pandora box of what’s inside of her.
