The MouthSoap Mogul: Issa Rae Secures Overall Deal With WarnerMedia

The multi-hyphen talent Issa Rae has secured a generationally impactful five-year overall deal for TV and a first-look deal for feature films with WarnerMedia.

Under Rae’s banner Hoorae, the mastermind behind The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl and HBO’s Insecure will exclusively develop TV projects for Warner Bros. Television, HBO and HBO Max, giving the entities IP ownership rights as a part of the overall deal. Rae is being handsomely rewarded with an upfront fee that is in the eight figures, according to Variety. Rae’s first-look feature film deal will give HBO Max, New Line, and Warner Bros. Pictures Group first right of refusal.

Insecure was a breakthrough series for HBO, and there is much more on the horizon,” Casey Bloys, chief content officer at HBO and HBO Max, said. “This new deal is an opportunity to leverage the strength of WarnerMedia to provide a multitude of platforms for Issa’s formidable talents as a producer and storyteller.”

Rae began her journey with WarnerMedia properties in 2012, which would later catapult her career with the hit series Insecure premiering on HBO in 2016. Now with Insecure in its final season, Rae is multi-tasking with several projects in the queue, including the remake of cult-classic Set It Off and comedy A Black Lady Sketch Show.

“HBO has been supportive of my work since the very first general meeting I had with Casey in 2012,” Rae said. “I’m thrilled to not only spread my creative wings with the network that makes all of my favorite series, but also to produce culturally resonant stories with new voices that incite exciting conversations via Hoorae’s expanded relationship with all WarnerMedia platforms.”

Congrats to the trailblazer!
