Review: Bushwick Blooze Band Ignites Old Music Flame With Instrumental “Waiting”

Joel R.

The idea of an instrumental track has become a notion that is not commonplace in the modern era of music. With Bushwick Blooze Band’s latest single, “Waiting”, they took a chance to revitalize a practice and it has served them well as musicians. The way to measure timelessness in a piece of art is to see how it will fare up against, ironically, time.

Bushwick Blooze Band is a group hailing from New York City and composed of guitarist and vocalist Brother Dave, bassist Chas Rio, and David Cornejo as the drummer. They are a trio that is rooted in blues and has had a hand in multiple other genres. This track was released through Chas Rio’s label (Chas Rio Music, LLC) and produced by Chas Rio.

When you don’t have vocals on a track, instruments are the only thing you can rely on and Bushwick Blooze Band does not disappoint. This level of craftsmanship shows the tremendous strength of the band and If they can keep the listener’s attention through composition and rhythm alone, that’s a clear display of dynamic arrangement.

“Waiting” harkens back to an era when the sounds of Southern California’s surfer rock was on the rise. There’s also a hint of twang that is reminiscent of southern rock and jazz. This composition is a diverse listen because each instrument is given an opportunity to showcase their unique placement in the song and collectively, the way the artists approaches its sound.

David Cornejo plays the drums and provides a rhythm that is more than exceptional on the song. He never ceases to give an audience a beat that is unrelentingly head bop worthy. Chas Rio’s bass line complements the guitar and drums perfectly, as it allows each of the instruments a backdrop to launch.

Lastly, but most certainly not least is Brother Dave’s guitar performance as it sets the tone of the song with its use of chord progressions and melodies. Brother Dave’s guitar is used to give the audience an anchor to listen to for a sense of progression.

With all the good qualities of the piece, the guitar serves to provide progression and allows the instrument to act as a singer in the absence of vocals. It does loop back around a handful of times that makes the reprisal of individual sections tedious to listen to after an allotted amount of time. However, most music fans will listen to this track with glee as it satisfies any rock or blues fan’s craving.
