Sony Pictures Bets On ‘Dumb Money,’ A New Film About The Epic GameStop Retail Trader Movement

Update: Originally slated for a Sept. 22 theatrical premiere, the wide release of Sony’s Dumb Money has moved to Oct. 6. The pic will have an exclusive release in major markets, Los Angeles and New York, on Sept. 15, and continue to a limited and moderate rollout on Sept. 22 and Sept. 29, respectively, before being available in most theaters.

“There’s hope for the little guy!” Craig Gillespie directs Dumb Money, the unbelievable story of the toggle war between retail traders and hedge fund investors battling over GameStop stock and the influence of Wall Street.

The Sony Pictures theatrical entry is based on the Ben Mezrich novel The Antisocial Network.  Lauren Schumer Blum and Rebecca Angelo are credited with writing the screenplay. Dumb Money stars Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, America Ferrera, Seth Rogen, Shailene Woodley, Anthony Ramos, Vincent D’Onofrio, Nick Offerman, and Sebastian Stan.

The synopsis reads, “Dumb Money is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, based on the insane true story of everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop into the world’s hottest company. In the middle of everything is regular guy Keith Gill (Dano), who starts it all by sinking his life savings into the stock and posting about it. When his social posts start blowing up, so does his life and the lives of everyone following him. As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets rich – until the billionaires fight back, and both sides find their worlds turned upside down.

In the heat of the pandemic, idle Reddit users began to formulate an online battalion within the social media platform’s chatroom “WallStreetBets” with the mission to flip the power dynamics and stifle the manipulation of consumer stocks by institutionalized traders.

They targeted what has been labeled meme-stocks, such as AMC Entertainment, GameStop, and Nokia, all companies struggling in the market at that time. Stock prices begin to soar, leaving hedge fund investors that shorted the stocks with dizzying deficients in the billions and forcing them to buy back shares to avoid further losses.

Now, all those who were a part of an epic moment in finance history will be able to see art imitate life.
