‘No Hard Feelings,’ Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Draws $15.1M Domestic Box Office

Gene Stupnitsky’s No Hard Feelings premiered in theaters to a humbling $15.1M domestic box office over the weekend.  The Sony Pictures comedy, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman, rolled out to 3,208 theaters across the nation.

Although laughter appears to be a much-needed antidote given the times, it seems like the general public is just not in the mood.  No Hard Feelings opened to a decent $6.3M on Friday before experiencing a decline in ticket sales the very next day.

Usually, distributors can depend on films to see an increase in box office grosses on Saturday when people tend to have more free time to go to the movies. This definitely was not the case for the quirky comedy as it dropped 22% on Saturday to $4.9M.  Sunday’s ticket sales brought in nearly $4M as the weekend came to a close.

The pic managed to captured $9.5M in the international market. As it stands, the worldwide cume is $24.6M. Not bad, but not quite the big splash that Stupnitsky films tend to make.

Stupnitsky, writer of genius comedies such as the television series The Office, had better opening luck with Good Boys, the coming of age story following three 6th grade buddies on the quest of curiosity and experimentation.  The 2019 film earned a reported $21.4M during its opening weekend and went on to become a $100M film upon its international rollout.

Bad Teacher, another one of Stupnitsky’s epic comedies starring Cameron Diaz, also made a box office imprint with a $31.6M domestic opening, followed by a worldwide cume of $216.2M.

Of course, these films were arguably released during times of comparatively better economic stability or at least economic optimism.  Needless to say, the trials of the times are starting to show its wear and tear on the consumer and not even a great cast and story could escape the retrenchment of moviegoers.

In addition to Lawrence and Feldman, the cast of No Hard Feelings includes Laura Benanti, Matthew Broderick, and Natalie Morales. The film follows a desperate Maddie Barker (Lawrence) who tries to save her home by taking on the job enlisted by two eager parents to help their 19-year-old introvert son become a man. Stupnitsky and John Phillips penned the screenplay.
