‘Wendy Williams: The Movie’ Exceeds Expectations With Spilling The Tea On The Queen Of Radio

Lifetime’s Wendy Williams: The Movie delved into the life of the radio personality turned talk show host and it nearly revealed all the tea. If you know anything about Ms. Williams, it’s no surprise that she had issues with weight, drug abuse and men. In fact, she fleshed out many of these details in her books Wendy’s Got the Heat, released in 2004, and her follow up The Wendy Williams Experience, released in 2005. It’s a smart move that some celebs have discovered — tell your own story so you can control the narrative.

There were some interesting details that were not included in the books, but revealed in the biopic. From date rape to infidelity, the biopic did its due diligence to shell out all the details.

R&B Singer “Rick Tony” Sexually Assaults Wendy Williams (Allegedly)

The “Queen of Radio” certainly didn’t hold back in the storytelling of her life in the Lifetime biopic. As her story unfolds, some of the details were completely shocking. Like the fact that in 1988 one of her first big radio guests raped her at his hotel room.

Later, on her talk show, she revealed that the alleged predator was the lead singer of Motown group Kagny known as Sherrick. He was depicted as the character Rick Tony in the movie. Sherrick would later die due to unknown causes in 1999.

Wendy Got Pregnant By Hip Hop Legend Eric B (Allegedly)

In the biopic, it was also revealed that the New Jersey native was entangled with hip hop legend Eric B (yeah, the Eric B that rapped alongside Rakim) in a rather toxic relationship that involved him using Wendy for her good credit, allegedly.

According to the gossip queen, once the relationship ended between the two, she found out that she was pregnant by the DJ and secretly had an abortion, something many fans were shocked to find out. Eric B apparently saw the film and had his own two cents to add.

“To hilarious I laughed to well it made for great Tv But the truth is something different Try that,” Eric B posted on Instagram.

In other words, Eric B’s defense was a throwback photo showing him donning chunky gold chains as he stands next to a Rose Royce.

The Biopic Made Charlamagne And Sharina Hudson Look Like A Struggle

The introduction of Wendy Williams’ radio sidekick Charlamagne Tha God was a very dismissive and odd one in the biopic. The most we saw of the shock jock was his role in introducing a googly moogly version of Williams’ former husband Kelvin Hunter’s longtime mistress Sharina Hudson (by the way, they did Hudson dirty, having her drive a pinto and work as a low-level club model — sheesh). Besides that, Charlamagne appeared to be a less than attractive, measly blimp in Williams’ story. Perhaps it’s because Charlamagne made sure to bridle the horse’s mouth with the strong arm of a powerful legal team or maybe it was a way of Williams telling her former friend exactly how she felt about him.

Still, as an employee of Williams for three years, he could’ve had a longer part in the story. Knowing how shady Wendy can be, the biopic leaves many to wonder if the representation of Charlamagne was Wendy’s shade tree rearing its ugly head. It’s such a shame that the two have not been able to mend their relationship. But, sometimes that’s how it goes — it is what it is.

Why Was Kelvin Hunter Made Wendy’s Guardian?

It was shocking to learn that even after all that they’ve been through, Kelvin was still appointed Wendy’s guardian while she was in the sober living house. The relationship between the former married couple was indeed toxic. Yet, the abuse that was documented in the TV personality’s books and even the suspicious bumps and bruises that plagued the star while she was on her talk show were completely left out of the film.

The most we saw of Kelvin’s anger was him slamming a book down on a table and knocking over a chair during an executive meeting. Where was the choking incident that many people witnessed at the radio station or the fractured shoulder and broken toe that Williams had to bear while on live television? What about Charlamagne’s accusations of verbal and physical abuse?

Williams’ constant need for companionship allowed Kelvin not only to take advantage of her hard work, but to also use her to make himself seem like a worthy power player. Only Wendy can answer why she didn’t cut Kelvin off after he jeopardized her career and negatively impacted their son. But, the relationship seemed like it was rooted in a trauma bond that transformed into a mental stronghold and spiritual soul tie. If anyone has ever been in a toxic relationship, it’s easy to understand how difficult it can be to give walking papers to someone you think you can’t live without.

Overall, the biopic leaves the impression that Wendy Williams, like most of us, still has a lot of soul searching to do. Beneath the glitz and glam of her successful career, there’s a sadness that resides behind Wendy’s big eyes. One thing that’s for sure is that she’s imperfectly human and this is why so many can relate to her story, especially those with dreams of making it big in hip hop and entertainment. For someone to have a dream that comes true and it be plagued by hardship and adversity, one can only hope that her future will be brighter than her past.

Now, about that Charlamagne biopic…
