Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings’ Makes Multi-Million Dollar Statement Over Labor Day Weekend

The box office gods have outdone themselves. Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings made a massive statement over the Labor Day weekend when it outperformed box office forecasts, grossing a whopping $75.5 million from 4,300 theaters over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Friday saw a $29.6 million opening, followed by a 21.6% dip on Saturday at $23.2 million. Then, an impressive Sunday only saw a measly 2.2% decline, totaling $22.7 million for the normally slow day at the theaters. The Asian American led film packed on even more weight with $18.9 million on Monday, resulting in the best Monday for a film during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Total box office grosses amount to $94.4 million domestically, with an estimated $56.2 million internationally. Worldwide, Shang-Chi‘s holiday weekend debut is predicted to be near the $150 million mark. Coming in at No. 1, Shang-Chi surpasses Universal’s Candyman (No. 2), Disney’s Free Guy (No. 3), Paramount Paw Patrol (No. 4), and Disney Jungle Cruise (No. 5).

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the pic follows Shang-Chi, the master of unarmed weaponry-based Kung Fu, who is forced to confront his past after being drawn into the Ten Rings organization.

The story is written by Dave Callaham, Andrew Lanham, and Cretton. Shang-Chi stars actors Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Michelle Yeoh, Wah Yuen, and Florian Munteanu.
