Kai Cenat And Fanum’s PS5 Giveaway Event Morphs Into Huge Riot In NYC

There’s a saying that you can’t take gamers anywhere! Kai Cenat and Fanum found that out during a social media infused giveaway the Twitch streamers held at New York City’s Union Square on Friday afternoon (Aug. 4). Thousands of gamers showed up to retrieve new Playstation 5 game consoles and accessories after a post from the popular YouTuber Cenat went viral at 3 p.m.

Cenat and Fanum announced that they would be giving away around 300 Playstations at the event. As the announcement went viral, groups of youth began to arrive to the park.

Chaos ensured when some antsy attendees compromised a construction site and began to hurl its objects, hitting members of the NYPD and other individuals. Social media also documented random fights breaking out, while people blocked traffic and stood on vehicles.

NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said that the event was “spontaneous” and not planned in conjunction with the City.

“The park and surrounding streets were overrun with people,” Chief Maddrey said at a press conference. “Individuals in the park began to commit acts of violence towards the police and the public.”

NYPD officials eventually removed Cenat, 21, from the premises to deescalate the situation and for safety reasons. He was taken into custody for questioning. Several individuals were arrested, ending the event before any game consoles or accessories were given away.

“NYPD offered multiple opportunities for the crowd to leave,” Chief Maddrey continued. “We tried to give them means of egress for them to exit the parks and exit the streets.”

NYPD is considering whether Cenat will face charges for inciting a riot and unlawful assembly. At this time, Fanum is not facing the brunt of media attention although the event was perceived to be collaboration.
