Issa Rae’s Character In ‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse,’ Jessica Drew, Gets Exclusive Sneak Peak At CinemaCon

What’s this that we hear? A little birdie by the name of The Mary Sue caught some minty tea from Gizmodo (so many sources!) on one of our favorite Hollywood movers and shakers, Issa Rae. As is well-known, the Insecure creator secured a voiceover role in the upcoming animated pic Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as Jessica Drew, alongside hottie Shameik Moore who plays Miles Morales.

At the annual CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas, attendees were privy to a top-secret, exclusive sneak peak of the film, leaving fans with some pretty cool insight into Rae’s role.

According to the account of Germain Lussier of Gizmodo, Rae’s character is expecting…Ironically, fans recently targeted the star with pregnancy rumors after a video leaked of the Rae greeting a her former co-star Yvonne Orji.

“Enter Jessica Drew of Earth-404, played by Issa Rae. She’s riding a motorcycle and Gwen is very excited to see another Spider-Woman. Especially one…that’s pregnant. Five months, to be exact, Jessica says. Gwen asks if she’ll adopt her and then the fight continues,” Lussier said.

With all the small little hints, it’s so easy to fall in the mind-frame of not minding our own business. But, if most fans of Rae knows she doesn’t play that. She famously responded to naysayers, “I am not pregnant, f**kyouverymuch. LET A B*TCH EAT DRINK AND BE MERRY.”

So, all you can do is respect the boundaries and secretly keep your fingers crossed that life imitates art. To be fair, the Jessica Drew character is the first Marvel lead to be pregnant while in action, but the timing is exciting!

As for the rest of the exclusive clip shown at CinemaCon, the action sounds like big box office.

Lussier continues, “As it continues, Jessica says to Miguel that maybe they should ask for Gwen’s help. He says no and that she knows why he can’t do that—we don’t know what he’s referring to. The fight flies up and outside of the museum into the air where the police helicopter isn’t sure who is the bad guy, Vulture or Miguel. The battle disables the helicopter, and it begins falling. Gwen uses her spider sense to begin to shoot webs to stop its fall. Miguel shoots his own webs and flies through the cockpit to save the pilots. Then Jessica helps to slow the helicopter down which stops right before it hits the ground. Vulture has been captured and the hostages saved.”

Other actors using their voice in the Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson, and Joaquim Dos Santos directed film are Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, and Jake Johnson.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is expected to swing into theaters on June 2, 2023.
