It’s got to be annoying when someone drags your name into something you have nothing to do with. Well, it happens to celebrities all the time — and this time, controversial rapper 6ix9ine is the victim of fodder.
How did it start? Over the weekend, Netflix released the official trailer for the streaming platform’s first ever Dutch feature film Forever Rich. In the trailer, an up-and-coming rapper by the name of Richie is experiencing the high of his life as he reaps the rewards of his budding rap career. His fans adore him and he appears to be booked for a pretty big gig. The designer wearing, social media bragging rapper is living in euphoria.
That is, until he is approached by a group of armed, masked men who shame him into submission and rob him of his most prized possession, a valuable timepiece. The moment goes viral, embarrassing Richie and tarnishing his reputation as a hard rapper. Richie resolves to get his dignity back by seeking retribution against his ops.
Actor Jonas Smulders transforms into Richie, with a cast that includes Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing, Hadewych Minis, Sergio Fontana, Daniël Kolf, Sinem Kavus, and Tim Olivier Somer.
The story is written by Nederlands Film Festival award winners Jeroen Scholten van Aschat and Shady El-Hamus, who also directs. Netherlands-based Fiction Valley produces.
The scribes have yet to confirm whether the film is inspired by the career of 6ix9ine, birth name Daniel Hernandez. The 25-year-old, Brooklyn rapper has lived several lifetimes in a span of 8 years. Known for talking big on social media — his latest chosen platform is Clubhouse — 6ix9ine was embroiled in his own saga of drama that would certainly make a gritty, but entertaining film.
Similar to the protagonist in Forever Rich, 6ix9ine was also thrilled to have made a way for himself in the rap industry and to help his mother have a better life. For a while, his trajectory was on the incline, even despite accusations of sexual misconduct.
However, that all changed during the summer of 2018 when the “Fefe” rapper was targeted by three gun-totting men, who proceeded to kidnap and rob him of his custom jewelry collection, before beating him. Like Richie, 6ix9ine’s reputation also hung in the balance and his entire career was in jeopardy, with some people even accusing the rapper of staging the incident.
Seeing that the trailer is so close to 6ix9ine’s story, Forever Rich may be worth a watch, even if you have to read subtitles.
