‘Euphoria’ Can’t Catch A Break, Third Season Delayed As Cast “Pursue Other Opportunities”

Amid the recent disruptive nature of the entertainment industry, HBO and Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria, has announced that the third season of the series is on hiatus until further notice. The new season was initially due for a 2025 premiere.

Reasons for the delay include a number of factors. For one, the union strikes of 2023, in which writers and actors withheld their services as they bartered for better pay and treatment, caused a nearly year-long pause in all work activities. Just after the strikes set off in May, Angus Cloud, the actor who portrayed Fez on Euphoria, passed away in July to the devastation of many fans of the show.

A reworking of the television series’ screenplays are still a work in progress and core cast members have been swooped up in projects causing work conflicts with the filming of Euphoria. Meanwhile, the context of the show follows a teenager (Zendaya) who struggles with substance abuse as she attends a high school full of students navigating poverty, sex, violence, and drugs. The huge time gaps in production may affect the believability of the actors as high schoolers.

Euphoria Season 1 Recap

The first season of Euphoria premiered in June 2019 to critical acclaim and high audience ratings. However, the pandemic-induced hiatus delayed the second season for two years — Season 2 premiered January 2022.

Now, the possibility of an even later premiere than the original 2025 date can mean that the show will be delayed another three years or more, if not entirely canceled.

“HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” reads a statement from an HBO spokesperson. “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”

The cast consists of Zendaya as Rue Bennett, Storm Reid as Gia, Hunter Schafer as Jules, Jacob Elordi as Nate, Maude Apatow as Lexi, Alexa Demie as Maddy, and Sydney Sweeney as Cassie.
