‘Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania’ Takes Over Universe With $120.4M Holiday Weekend

The extended weekend attributed to the Presidents’ Day holiday managed to muscle an impressive box office for Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, despite widespread weather issues.  The two-hour superhero feature picked up $120.4M from a total of 4,345 theaters, making it the No. 1 film over the weekend.

Peyton Reed, who directed Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), returned for the third installment of the Paul Rudd franchise with a screenplay crafted by Emmy-winning scribe Jeff Loveness, a very noticeable  onscreen change from prior writers.

The film relied on the appeal of newcomer Jonathan Majors and the premise of an ultimate showdown between his character, Kang The Conqueror, and Ant-Man as a fresh plot to the wheel of innovation.  With an average of $10,686 per screen on Friday, Feb. 17, Quantumania amassed a daily of $46.4M.  Saturday (Feb. 18) gained $33.9M, followed by $25.8M on Sunday (Feb. 19).  Opening box office for the three days totaled $106.1M.

Presidents’ Day (Feb. 20) drew in an additional $14.3M, helping the film to reach $120.4M, aligning with industry projections.  As it stands, Quantumania made a worldwide cume of $257M, with 50.4% coming from international box office.

In rankings, Quantumania pushed out Warner Bros. Magic Mike’s Last Dance from the coveted position, after the Channing Tatum film swooped the accolade from Avatar: The Way of Water a week prior.

In its 10th week at box office, Avatar: The Way of Water ($657.5M) got the last laugh, maintaining the No. 2 spot while Magic Mike’s Last Dance ($18M) fell to No. 3.  Universal’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish ($166.2M) moved up from the No. 5 position to No. 4 in its 9th week.  Knock at the Cabin ($30.4M), another Universal pic, also moved up one notch to No. 5.
