Vivica A. Fox Doesn’t Agree With Reimagining Of Cult Classic ‘Set It Off’

In a recent interview with ET Live, a very spirited Vivica A. Fox discussed her new holiday film Christmas Matchmakers and also expressed that she is not looking forward to the “reimagining” of cult classic Set It Off.

The 1996 film featured Vivica A. Fox as Frankie, a wrongfully terminated bank employee who teams up with her best friends to rob a chain of banks. Directed by F. Gary Gray, the film stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Kimberly Elise and Queen Latifah.

Insecure actress Issa Rae is set to produce and star in the remake, which is in the early stages of development.

Despite reports trying to pit Fox against Rae, Fox was very respectful in addressing why she doesn’t think there should be a reimagining of the film.

“It’s a classic, leave it alone,” she told ET Live’s Melicia Johnson. “There’s absolutely no reason to try to redo it, it’s been done. We did it so well, that people are absolutely going to compare it to that and I think that that’s her taking on a tremendous chore because that film has become a cult classic and some things are just better left…”

Fox continued, “Create your own new franchise that if you want to do a new film of girls robbing banks, create your own thing. You can make it up to date. Like you said, we did that film in 1996. We’re in 2019 going into 2020. So, create your own thing because people are absolutely going to compare [the remake] to it and…if it’s not good, they’re going to slay [Rae] for it.”

Fox preferred sequels when asked about the sudden influx of Hollywood reboots, reimaginings and remakes.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it if they do something that goes into the next chapter of the story,” she said. “It’s when they try to recreate it, and its already been done and that magic’s been captured in a bottle. It’s very hard to capture that, just so you know…Unless it’s moving the story forward, I just don’t think it should be done.”

Christmas Matchmakers, produced by and starring Fox, premieres on the ION network on Dec. 8.
