The Rundown On The 72nd Emmy Awards, ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ ‘Watchmen,’ And ‘Succession’ Win The Night

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the 72nd Emmy Awards started off with a crowded auditorium of beautifully dressed actors and executives. For a moment, it seemed like we were back in 2019 when there was no such thing as COVID-19 lockdowns and social distancing.

Does anyone recall the film I Am Legend, starring Will Smith where he used mannequins as people just so he wouldn’t feel alone? Well, it seems like life is imitating art. Kimmel brought viewers back to the stark reality when he revealed that he was, in fact, hosting in front of cardboard versions of celebrities.

One bright touch to this year’s award show was that DJ Nice was on the turntables bumping some lit nineties dance music. There was also a weird, but entertaining fire scene where Jennifer Aniston and Kimmel burned an award card containing the winner’s name in order to get rid of any hints of virus. They’re trying….

A lot of black people were present with Kimmel at the actual Staples Center where the award show was held. The troupe of talented actors included Tracee Ellis Ross, Zendaya, Anthony Anderson, Cynthia Enrivo, Tyler Perry, Laverne Cox, and music artist H.E.R., who performed Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” for the memoriam segment of the show.

Top winner of the night, Schitt’s Creek, swept the comedy category, winning a total of seven televised Emmys. Watchmen won four televised Emmys in the limited series category, totaling 11 Emmys. Succession, which took away four televised Emmys in the drama category, won a total of seven awards.
