That Time When MTV Spring Break Was The Place To Be

Before social media became the outlet of choice for sprightly adults searching for connection, there used to be this thing called MTV Spring Break

Debuting in 1986, the television special would run on the flagship network until 2005 before transferring to its affiliate, MTVU, lasting until 2014. There was a recent attempt to revive the 28 season IP, but the original appeal of the series has been stunted by unfolding real-world events, such as innovative tech, world health crises, mass shootings, and a racial inequality reckoning, all shaping these types of events as liabilities rather than stress-free fun.

Still, the show became epic for its live performances, athletically-fit models, and spirited attendees. The annual event would film at coastal locations embedded in California, Florida, Texas, and Mexico, accelerating the tourism of premier spring break and summertime destinations, such as Daytona Beach, San Diego’s Mission Beach, and South Padre Island.

MTV Spring Break, along with its pristine sunny skies and paradise beach atmosphere, enabled everyone who couldn’t attend in person to soak up the jubilant, positive vibes through their television screens.

Music of the time also added to what became an exuberant celebration of life.  Everyone from Notorious B.I.G. to Britney Spears traveled miles to these coveted destinations to offer some of their most memorable performances.

Who could forget the time when Jay-Z was accidentally squirted with water by one of his water gun toting hype men?

Or the time when 50 Cent nearly had to run across an obstacle course to get to the main stage?  Who knew they had drones back then to give a bird’s eye view of the venue?

Let’s not forget when MTV VJ Bill Bellamy introduced the late and great Aaliyah as she two-stepped it all the way onto the center of the MTV Spring Break Jams stage in 1997.

Or when Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Tyga were on one stage at the same time, and even then, Drake’s singing vocals stood out over all?

Those definitely were some joyful days — at least it appeared that everyone was just a little bit more happier.  Would the world be able to tolerate the return of such an event in the current climate in which we live?
