Shawn Carter Foundation Raises $6M, While Jay-Z Settles Roc Nation Logo Lawsuit

Business man Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter raised over $6 million for a fund assisting college students at his gala sponsored by the Shawn Carter Foundation. The glamorous event that took place on Saturday (Nov. 16) at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida brought out the whole family, including Beyonce and Jay-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter.

The event included a blackjack tournament and a performance by R&B singer Alicia Keys. Other guests in attendance included her mother Tina Lawson, Richard Lawson, Yo Gotti (who lost $500,000 at a blackjack table), DJ Khaled, Meek Mill, Michael Blackson, Swizz Beatz, Tyler Perry, and NFL owner Robert Kraft.

Jay-Z has been having a great week. Not only did he raise a lot of money for a good cause, but he also settled a two-year legal battle over IP rights with Iconix Brand Group. Iconix sued the mogul after the Roc Nation logo was put on Major League Baseball merchandise.

The company claimed that licensing rights had expired for Jay-Z after Iconix purchased the logo for $204 million. Jay-Z’ camp countersued for breach of contract. On November 13th, the suit was dismissed in court and both parties agreed to settle.

The Shawn Carter Foundation’s mission is to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships further their education at institutions of higher learning.

The foundation provides resources for college prep, study abroad, career exposure, community programs, and scholarships.
