Review: Tyga Doubles Down On Money, Cars, And…In Music Video For “Nigo In Beverly Hills”

Review By Greg Poblete

Wednesday, Jan. 6th was quite an eventful day to say the least. One event that flew a bit under the radar was that Tyga released a new music video for his song, “Nigo in Beverly Hills.” The video premiered exclusively on World Star Hip Hop’s YouTube channel on Wednesday and is currently hovering a bit above 100,000 views.

Tyga, the West Coast rapper known for hits such as, “Taste” and “Rack City,” has been riding the wave of releasing single after single, as well as a few guest appearances throughout 2020. Just to name a few, there is the massive TikTok famous song “Bored in the House” with Curtis Roach, “Vacation,” “Money Mouf” with Saweetie and YG, “Aggy” with Jackboy, and he even has a song on the new Spongebob movie soundtrack, “Krabby Step” with Swae Lee and Lil Mosey. And Tyga’s latest studio album, Legendary was released back in 2019, so Tyga is definitely keeping his fans fed.

The music video for “Nigo in Beverly Hills” dropped this week and comes straight from Tyga’s latest mixtape, Well Done Fever. The mixtape, released this past Christmas, is the fifth installment in Tyga’s Well Done series and includes songs such as “BOPP” and “For the Night.” “Nigo in Beverly Hills” sits at a quick 1:57 in length, and is attached to a typical hip hop music video flashing fancy sports cars, expensive jewelry, an unnecessary private jet, and a twerking woman.

The song is produced by DJ Drama and has a pretty cookie-cutter instrumental that isn’t too memorable, but isn’t terrible. Tyga raps a couple verses over the beat and steers clear of having a sticky hook or chorus. He just spits a few bars and then dips. Lyrically, Tyga talks about his come-up in the rap game first living in Bay, working on a mixtape, and getting a feature from Lil B. He then mentions how he met Lil Wayne at the 2007 VMA’s and instantly got signed to Young Money records. He continues by saying how he has friends in LA he can’t trust, and that he keeps getting money and living their dreams.

It may be a bit morbid, but one of the funniest lines in the song comes in at the second verse when Tyga says, “I bought that Wraith, crashed it the first day, I swear I got angels watching over me.”  Although he most likely wrote that line to show his appreciation for still being alive, in the context of a Gangsta Grillz song, it is rather hilarious to flex crashing a $300,000 car on the first day of driving it.

The last verse of the song could probably be considered the hook of the song where Tyga repeats a few times that he “look like Nigo.” Nigo is the Japanese fashion designer, DJ, and record producer who has worked with a number of famous artists such as Pharell, Kid Cudi, and Kanye West. He is best known for creating the clothing brand A Bathing Ape, or Bape, and is often seen wearing a flashy chain, hence the reference in the song.

The music video in itself is pretty run of the mill with Tyga and A.E. flaunting around an airport strip with a private jet in the background, a Ferrari with suicide doors, and plenty of cash. There’s not much of a story, but the song in itself isn’t too demanding or necessary for such a grandiose visual pairing either. Especially with the track length clocking in under two minutes, there is not much space for an expansive story to be told. All Tyga needed to do was spit his rhymes in front of some luxurious things, and he does that quite well here.

There’s not much else to say rather than this was an okay Tyga music video of an okay Tyga song. This video definitely sparks curiosity on how the rest of the Well Done Fever mixtape sounds like.

Tyga’s Well Done Fever mixtape is available on Soundcloud and datpiff.
