Review: Nonviolenze Releases Music Visual For ‘Mirror,’ A Metaphorical Reflection Of Society

Joel R.

Most music can be surmised on concepts that relate to sonic pleasure and understanding. This is most certainly the case when looking at the latest release “Mirror” from Nonviolenze’s debut album Ghosts of War. As the song takes a deep dive into metaphors about anger and grief, it positions us, the listeners, in a state that will allow us to exam what hate does.

It is a piece that takes itself very seriously lyrically and presents itself through a sharp lens. It comes as no surprise that the song’s music video would have the same level of care that’s put into its filmmaking. The music video uses its visual presentation to show the audience images that can convey the message of the song profoundly.

Through the video, the song takes on new meaning as there is imagery representing the music’s themes. This is highly prevalent when looking at the video’s production design with its use of camera tricks and mirrors. It uses mirrors as a way to put the themes of the lyrics at the forefront of the viewer’s mind. As the mirrors are used to show how violence and anger can be a cyclical pattern that feeds on each other, a cycle that only leads down a path to where you started rather than reaching a level of clarity.

It is an effective use in its visual design because it shows a level of reflection on the filmmaker and musician towards the track’s lyrics. Thematically it all comes to a head when the video ends with a shot of the mirrors breaking around the album artwork, visually communicating to the viewers that the cyclical nature of anger has been broken. This arc is an excellent display of direction and a singular vision for a project coming to fruition.

Though the video has strong themes and represents the music masterly, a segment of the visual presentation was just slightly off. That being that some of the edits had a bit of a jarring effect on the overall experience. That is not to say that it was a deal-breaker for the project as a whole. Instead, that portion of the video could have been smoothed out—generating a flawless piece of media. However, it is a minor flaw in an overall great project.

The Music on the track was produced and written by Nonviolenze (Shri Baratan) exclusively. It was released independently, and Baratan provided the performance for the vocals and all the instruments used on the track. Nonviolenze is the stage name for Shri Baratan and the name of the project collective he amassed, encompassing a multitude of Artists, Web Designers, and Musicians alike. All to bring their work to a larger audience.

The work Baratan does is one piece of the puzzle to that equation. The music, as well as the video itself, can be found on Spotify and their YouTube channel.
