The original Bird Box directed by Susanne Bier (The First Lady) introduced audiences to an intangible creature who causes people to delete themselves when they see it. In order to survive, the people are forced to navigate land and water while blindfolded. The phenomenal concept incited several real-life challenges and sparked cultural conversations about possible apocalyptic events back in 2018.

Netflix enjoyed the success of the film reporting that 80 million households viewed Bird Box. It also created demand for a sequel which was likely delayed by another sweeping global phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2020.
