Mr. Will Smith Walks The Walk, Withdraws Membership From Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences

Will Smith has made the decision to lead by example. Unlike many in the public eye (and the anonymous), he has owned up to his horrible choice to physically confront Chris Rock at the Oscars after the comedian made a joke in poor taste, that, according to producer Will Packer, was off script.

Smith writes, “I fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.”

The actor has resolved to remove himself from membership in the perceived prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

“I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the board deems appropriate,” Smith informed the Academy.

Smith hopes that the decision to walk away from what most actors work their entire career for, will draw attention back to the art and craft of film.

“I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film,” Smith adds. “Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” Smith continues. “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”

There’s no doubt that his decision is a painful one, but an honorable example of taking full accountability for his choices. The Pursuit of Happyness actor can walk away from the Academy, and possibly his Oscar award and future career within mainstream circles knowing that he defended his family, stood up against passive aggressive bullying, and illustrated the beauty of being perfectly human in all his flaws.

Not one human can blaze the path of perfection and be so righteous to think that they, too, one day won’t need grace and mercy extended to them.

To be clear, what’s Hollywood without Will Smith? He has gone far and beyond his duty to be apologetic and regretful. Fans don’t want to see his hard-earned Oscar taken away or for Hollywood to partake in another form of bullying by blacklisting Smith. What about I Am Legend 2?

One can only hope that Rock would be so gracious enough to attempt to mend a broken relationship and fellowship that has exemplified the alpha of Black Hollywood.

The Top Five actor could start with a genuine apology to Jada Pinkett Smith. Pushing the boundaries of forgiveness even more, the reconciliation could come in the form of Smith and Rock collaborating on a project or simply having TMZ catch them at lunch together, all smiles.

There’s no sides to choose in this sad week in Hollywood. With that said, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, along with Chris Rock, need extended mercies and an opportunity to heal. An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere, on both ends of the red carpet.
