Jason Constantine, co-president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group and a driving force behind some of Hollywood’s most influential film and television franchises, has died after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 55. Known for his keen eye for storytelling and his fearless approach to the business of filmmaking, Constantine played a pivotal role in shaping Lionsgate’s creative direction for more than two decades.
“With his fearless spirit, creative energy and enduring talent relationships, Jason embodied the very best of our studio and our industry,” Lionsgate said in a statement released Friday. “His influence will continue to be felt in many of our most successful franchises. His career was built around the principles that a great idea can come from anywhere, a box office triumph is meant to be shared by an entire team and our creative choices need to be bold and daring.”
Constantine’s tenure at Lionsgate began in 2001, and he steadily rose through the ranks to become one of its top creative executives. He was instrumental in the acquisition and development of major franchises including John Wick, The Hunger Games, Saw, and Now You See Me. He also championed unique projects that became sleeper hits, like Knives Out and La La Land, as well as TV hits under Lionsgate’s umbrella such as Orange is the New Black and Mad Men.
In addition to his professional achievements, Constantine was widely admired for his collaborative leadership style and deep relationships with filmmakers, writers, and producers. His colleagues described him as a mentor, innovator, and someone who consistently put story and talent above all else.
“Jason’s legacy is not only in the films he helped bring to life, but in the countless careers he shaped and supported along the way,” said a longtime Lionsgate colleague.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Constantine was a lifelong lover of cinema. He is survived by his wife Kristin and their three children. In his 20-plus years at Lionsgate, he helped build a slate that challenged norms, broke boundaries, and left a permanent mark on the entertainment landscape. As the industry mourns his loss, it also celebrates a career defined by bold choices, lasting friendships, and an unwavering passion for film.
