Hulu And Rashida Jones Join Forces To Trigger Our Worst Workplace Fears In Psych Thriller ‘The Other Black Girl’

Psychological thrillers circumscribed by socially conscious themes are becoming a mind-bending force field dominating the genre of television series and films serving people of color. The newest addition to this collection comes from Rashida Jones, who is executive producer of The Other Black Girl.

Based on the New York Times bestseller by Zakiya Dalila Harris, The Other Black Girl follows Nella, a Black editorial assistant working at a predominately White publishing firm in New York.  Nella begins to feel the sting of marginalization as the only Black woman employee until Hazel, another Black woman, is hired. But, the bond that brings the two ladies together suddenly seems to be the portal to a more sinister reality in the corporate rat race.

Rising star Sinclair Daniel (Insidious: The Red Door) plays the role of Nella, and is joined by a cast that includes Ashleigh Murray (Riverdale) as Hazel, Karina Willis (The Game), Kate Owens (Special Report), Alyshia Ochse (Days of Our Lives), Eric McCormack (Will & Grace), Hunter Parrish (Quantico), and Garcelle Beauvais (The Jamie Foxx Show).

Hulu ordered the 10-episode television series in association with Disney’s Onyx Collective and Temple Hill Entertainment, responsible for the hit show Dave and $100M thriller Smile.

Many of the scribes on the series hail from the Kenya Barris writing camp, which makes sense given that Jones worked with Barris on Netflix’s #BlackAF.  Jones contributed writing for one episode, along with Angela Nissel (Mixed-ish), and Caroline Williams (Maniac), with teleplays written by Kara Brown (Swarm), showrunners Gus Hickey (Grown-ish) and Jordan Reddout (Mixed-ish), and newcomer Janelle Spence.

The Other Black Girl premieres Sept. 13 on Hulu.
