‘Fresh Off The Boat’ Ends After Six Seasons, Following Constance Wu Expressing Disdain For Series Renewal

ABC’s trailblazing sitcom Fresh Off The Boat has been cancelled after six seasons, news sources are reporting.

The series, created and executive produced by Nahnatchka Khan, will end with a one-hour finale on Feb. 21. Ratings declined throughout the lifecycle of the show. Nielsen ratings revealed that the series secured 3.2 million viewers among the 18-49 demographic, with an average 0.7 rating.

Starring Constance Wu and Randall Park, Fresh Off The Boat followed the adjustment of an Asian-American family living in 1990s Florida. The show also starred Hudson Yang, Ian Chen, Forrest Wheeler, Chelsey Crisp and Lucille Soong.

Despite the show’s prior impact and acclaim among critics for being inclusive and diverse, Wu, who played the role of mother Jessica Huang, appeared to not want to be a part of the show anymore when she went on social media and responded to the sixth season renewal of the show with a post that said, “So upset right now that I’m literally crying. Ugh. F**k.”

The Hustlers and Crazy Rich Asians star eventually apologized in August, expressing that she was upset that she had to turn down another acting project.

ABC President Karey Burke released a statement about the show ending.

“We couldn’t be prouder of this game-changing show and the impact it has had on our cultural landscape,” said Burke. “The success of Fresh Off the Boat has helped pave the way for inclusion throughout the industry.”

“Nahnatchka Khan and her brilliant creative team have created an unforgettable series with an Asian-American family front and center, something that hadn’t been done in two decades,” she continued. “The cast, led by Randall Park and Constance Wu, is one of the finest and funniest on television. We’ll miss the Huang family and are eternally grateful for the incredibly heartfelt stories they have told these past six seasons.”
