Don’t Let Taylor Swift And Brittany Renner Distract You From The Political Fight Taking Place As The 2024 Elections Approach

There’s no Brad Pitt in sight, but the U.S. political landscape has become one mudslinging Fight Club. That’s right American citizens, politicians in the age range of our grandparents (and great grandparents) are submerged in a dirty war of tit-for-tat.

So much so that the distraction of possible romantic relationships between singer Taylor Swift and football player Travis Kelce or fitness model Brittany Renner and sports commentator Shannon Sharpe offers many of us a break from the exhausting political fodder. Staying current on political affairs in 2023 is like using an anchor as a water float in the middle of an intense rip current. But, we’ll try.

Besides Renner declaring that she will never date a White man again — a sure way to limit her chances with Kelce after Swift moves on from him around the end of her tour — there’s been quite a few developments that are sure to change by the time you finish this article. So, we’ll make it brief.

Here’s what you should know:

The Trump Empire Faces Collapse In Fraud Case

Donald Trump is expected in court to defend his real estate properties in a non-jury trial presided by the Judge Arthur Engoron of the Supreme Court 1st Judicial District in New York. New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a civil lawsuit on Tuesday (Sept. 26) accusing the former president of participating in fraudulent activities connected to his legendary Empire State properties, including the Trump Tower.

The suit claims Trump manipulated the valuation of many of his properties in order to receive favorable business insurance rates and loan terms, among other benefits. Annual financial statements with padded data were used, including those regarding Trump Tower showing an estimated worth of $327 million and listing it as triple its size. Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s exclusive Florida club, also contained discrepancies in its valuation by as much as 2,300%.

As punishment, his business licenses have been rescinded. An appeal filed by Trump’s legal representation, stating disclaimers on the financial statement should absolve Trump of any liability, was rejected by the New York intermediate appellate court on Thursday (Sept. 28).

Trump has called the suit a “Political Witch Hunt” and a “Railroading job” imposed by the “Radical Left DOJ for purposing Election Interference.”

House Republicans Go Forward With Biden Impeachment Inquiry

James Comer, the House Oversight Committee Chairman, will execute subpoenas of detailed bank records belonging to President Joe Biden’s sons, Hunter and James.

The latest development comes as Republicans lead an investigation into Biden’s involvement with his sons’ businesses, where they are being accused of accepting over $20 million through shell companies between 2014 and 2019, something denied by Biden supporters close to the situation who stand by the companies having legit business interests.

“The House Oversight Committee will present evidence uncovered to date and hear from legal and financial experts about crimes the Bidens may have committed as they brought in millions at the expense of U.S. interests,” Comer said.

So far, the impeachment inquiry officially announced by Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, has been hard-pressed to find evidence of President Biden’s involvement.

In other news, a migrant issue threatens to compromise U.S. borders, and the government may face a possible shutdown. Seven Republican presidential candidates went at it in the second Republican debate. Trump was noticeably absent.

So, while it’s always a pleasure to get lost in a sea of pop culture speculation and scandal, there’s a lot of bigger issues deserving our attention.
