Critics Choice Awards Highlights People Of Color With Will Smith, Halle Berry, Ariana DeBose, And Lee Jung-jae Among Winners

This year’s Critics Choice Awards was watch-worthy, and it was mainly because entertainers representing people of color in Hollywood were in the building. The 27th annual event was hosted by the bubbly pairing of Taye Diggs and Nicole Byer and broadcasted from Hollywood and London.

Airing on The CW and TBS, the presentation was filled with iconic figures in the industry that have actually moved the needle in entertainment.

At one particular junction, Issa Rae, who was accompanied by her new husband, presented the SeeHer Award to a more-than-deserving Halle Berry, an Academy Award winner and lead of the MMA drama Bruised. The award recognizes women in the industry who have pushed the boundaries and defied stereotypes, all while promoting authentic portrayals of women in television and film.

The award show didn’t disappoint, giving Will Smith the award for “Best Actor” in recognition of his role in the Warner Bros. pic King Richard. Surrounded by the cast, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Serena and Venus Williams were present to support Smith as he accepted his award.

Ariana DeBose nabbed the “Best Supporting Actress” award for her acting contribution to Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, a 20th Century Fox picture. On the series side, Squid Game took home the award for “Best Foreign Language Series,” while the Netflix series lead actor Lee Jung-jae won the “Best Actor In A Drama Series” category.

Others in attendance included Selena Gomez, Andrew Garfield, Ava DuVernay, and Kristen Stewart.

HBO and HBO Max received the most awards, taking home 10 for Succession, Mare of Easttown, Hacks, Oslo, The White Lotus, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Meanwhile, Netflix followed with the second top wins, receiving seven awards.

The complete winners list is available on the Critics Choice Association website.
