Teyana Taylor’s ‘The Album’ Relishes In Love, Loss And Life While Paying Homage To Classic R&B

Teyana Taylor is more than a woman on her latest project titled The Album. One striking aspect of her third studio album is the album cover art. The digital art shows a bare top Taylor with gold rings elongating her neck while rocking the iconic high-top fade popularized in the U.S. by Grace Jones.

Reminiscent of all of the favorite R&B singers of the ’90s, Taylor delivers a beautifully crafted 23-track album about love, loss and life. The album is like a time travel machine as it samples songs, such as Lauryn Hill’s “The Sweetest Thing,” Musiq’s “Just Friends,” Mase’s “Tell Me What You Want,” and Erykah Badu’s “Next Lifetime,” to name a few.

She proceeded the release of The Album with singles “We Got Love” featuring Lauryn Hill, the class of 2020 anthem “Made It,” “Morning” with Kehlani and “Bare Wit Me.”

Some standout tracks include “Lowkey” featuring the Texas legend Erykah Badu, the soul wrenching “Lose Each Other,” the vulnerable “Still” where she can be heard crying, the Davido collab “Killa,” the alarming “Wrong Bitch,” and the call girl inspired “1800-One-Night.”

Other features include Rick Ross, Junie, Quavo, Missy Elliott, Future, Davido, Big Sean, Lauryn Hill and King Combs. Taylor even includes her husband Iman Shumpert on “Wake Up Love” where he drops some verses, while her daughter appears alongside Rick Ross on “Come Back To Me.”

The Getting Out Our Dreams project has a list of notable producers that starts with Mr. Kanye West and is followed by Hitmaka, Boogz, MIKE DEAN, Johan Lenox, E*Vax, NinetyFour, Cardiak, NOVA WAV, Miguel Jimenez, Tune Da Rula, Mixx, Bizness Boi and Seven Aurelius.

The Album is the third studio album for Taylor. Although not always acknowledged appropriately by mainstream media, Taylor has always exceeded expectations with her artistic vision and incredible singing ability. With that said, this project right here is undeniably one of the best R&B albums in the last few years, period.
