Cardi B And Megan Thee Stallion Are Giving Verified Rap Group In Latest Collab For “Bongos”

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, two artists among the current front runners of female rappers, show solidarity in the scintillating clap back single “Bongos.”  It wasn’t too long ago that the charismatic duo teamed up for the 2020 chart-topper “WAP,” channeling B.A.P.S., the 1997 Halle Berry rags-to-riches film now considered an urban classic.

At this point, the Bronx and Houston natives are a modern-day version of Salt-N-Pepa, nicely complementing each other in style, tone, and lyricism.

The single, released early on Friday (Sept. 8), rides a repetitive ab lib resonating from the riddims embedded in Jamaican Dancehall and evolved into what Cardi has proudly referred to as Dominican Dembow.  Similar to the formula used in “WAP,” Cardi and Megan tetherball the lyrics, addressing social media fodder and serving a potent dose of braggadocious declarations.

Interesting enough, both women have recently ascended from the depths of controversy, with Cardi B making headlines for suing and winning the case against a major YouTube blogger and Megan ending a long-winded court drama with a former music counterpart.

“Bongos” televises their coming out party marked by colorful vogue on the sun-kissed sands of Malibu.  The visual certainly helps, at first listen without it the song does little to inspire emotion.  However, something about Megan donning an African inspired, queen-like cap crown while showing off her very toned physique in the video not only makes “Bongos” sound like another hit for the pair, but Cardi thrives off the energy that Megan’s presence inserts.

Listening to Cardi B as she makes her interview rounds to promote the single, even after all her success and nearly impossible transition from exotic dancer to reality star to Grammy-winning recording artist, the wife and mother of two still struggles with imposter syndrome.  In an Angela Yee interview, Cardi revealed her concern in dropping her sophomore album due to the social media criticism she’s experienced with previous singles.

It’s unfortunate for fans of Cardi B who have waited five years so far for her to drop a full-length album — she is optimistic to release an album at the top of 2024, but this isn’t the first time she teased an album and came up empty-handed.  If anything, perhaps the superstar rapper should consider making a collaboration album with Megan, similar to that done by Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne or Drake and Future’s What A Time To Be Alive.

In the meantime, it looks like we’ll have to work with “WAP” and “Bongos.”
