What’s Beef? ‘BEEF’ Is The New Netflix Series From Lee Sung Jin, Starring Road Ragers Steven Yeun And Ali Wong

Most drivers have been there before.  Someone makes a traffic infraction causing another driver to respond with an overreaction and before they know it, it’s a whole road rage situation.  While many are forgiving of the less compassionate drivers who seem to think that the road is specifically their raceway for bad car stunts, some are gifted at holding onto a grudge until completely satisfied.

Hence, the new original Netflix series from Dave writer Lee Sung Jin titled BEEF, an unwittingly comedic journey of two people on the cusp of losing it — and then, finally losing it — when they cross paths during a parking lot road rage incident.

The directorial debut for Sung Jin stars Academy Award nominee Steven Yuen (Nope), Emmy nominee Ali Wong (Paper Girls), Joseph Lee (Searching), David Choe (The Mandalorian), Young Mazino (Drama High), and Andrew Santino (Dave).

Netflix released the official trailer on March 15 showing two people, the successful entrepreneur Amy Lau (Wong) and flailing contractor Danny Cho (Yuen), experiencing the mounting pressures of life and pretending that everything is perfect.  Their lives happen to merge when Danny attempts to back up his truck from a parking spot nearly hitting Amy’s stereotypical white Mercedes SUV.  The ever so ungracious Amy flips the bird at Danny, and Danny breaks, committing to a long-winded car chase.

A special clip of the “inciting incident” was released two days after the official trailer to give viewers an inside peek into what sparked BEEF between Danny and Amy.

BEEF, a production of A24, which is still on a high from its sweep of the Oscars thanks to the production company’s highly acclaimed Everything Everywhere All at Once, made its world premiere in the Paramount Theatre at the 2023 SWSW Film & TV Festival in Austin on March 18.

Executive producers include Sung Jin, Wong, Yuen, Alli Reich, Hikari, and Ravi Nandan.  First pitched in April 2021, the half-hour dramedy delivers 10 episodes to Netflix’s streaming platform.

BEEF sparks on Netflix, premiering April 6.  Don’t forget to invite all road ragers to the watch party!
