Twitter Erupts With Fighting Words Over Hashtag #NotMyPresident As Joe Biden Steps Into Presidential Role

After nearly committing his entire life to a career in politics, Joe Biden, 78, is now the 46th president of the United States. In the inaugural address, the newly minted president forged his acceptance speech with rhetoric of unity as he proudly announced that “Democracy had prevailed.”

“I know speaking of unity can sound to some like a foolish fantasy these days,” president Biden said during the inaugural address. “I know the forces that divide us are deep and they are real. I also know they are not new.”

He added, “Unity is the path forward.”

But, Biden’s entry into the highest position in the land does not come without an influx of opposition, particularly expressed on social media. As Donald Trump saunters back to Florida avoiding the traditional welcoming of the next president, his supporters are repurposing “Not My President,” the phrase that formerly represented disdain for the 45th president, to now refer to president Biden.

Early on Wednesday morning, Trump supporters took to Twitter to start the hashtag #NotMyPresident. It wouldn’t be long before Biden supporters and trolls wanting in on the fun started to make their own Tweets in response to the opposition.

Reactions on social media show a snippet of how divided the country is regarding politics. While some people find this day to be just another part of a fanatical saga in politics, the nation still has to grapple with issues in public health, economic stability, racial justice, national security, and more.

With that said, Biden’s induction into presidency may be a win for liberal and Democratic supporters, but with fatigue overwhelming the citizens of the U.S., the sentiment is more closer to the tone of what can Biden do to put this nation on track as we turn the page in American politics.
