‘Expend4bles’ Makes Earnest $33.9M Worldwide Opening Weekend Cume In Rough Entertainment Climate

Lionsgate’s Expend4bles courageously premiered in movie theaters Sept. 22 amid a tumultuous time in the media and entertainment industry. The star-studded film, starring Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Andy Garcia, Megan Fox, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and Dolph Lundgren, despite a roll out to 3,518 theaters, box office turnout was still sluggish.

Opening weekend performance is reported to be a total of $8.3 million for domestic. Friday box office collected an average of $909 per theater, totaling a $3.2 million opening day. Saturday dropped by 4.7% at $3.05 million, while Sunday drew in $2.05 million, a 32.8% differential.

International box office performed relatively better than domestic. Expend4bles amassed an estimated $25.6 million, with a reported $19.3 million of that coming from the China release.

Scott Waugh (Need for Speed) directs the fourth installment of the Expendables, a $804 million franchise spearheaded in 2010 by Stallone, who directed the first film, The Expendables, a screenplay he wrote alongside Dave Callaham. The film collection has featured some of the top leading action stars of all-time, including Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Harrison Ford, Terry Crews, Mel Gibson, and Liam Hemsworth.

The Expendables (2010) had a domestic opening of $34.8 million over its Aug. 13 weekend release. The pic went on to earn $103 million domestically and $171.4 million internationally, for a total cume of $274.5 million.

Released in Aug. 2012, The Expendables 2 collected $28.6 million over opening weekend, but fell short relative to its predecessor at $85 million countryside. However, international box office made up for it, earning $229.9 million and contributing to a worldwide cume of $315 million.

By the time the third installment released in Aug. 2014, both domestic and international box office began to show signs of sequel fatigue by those moving on from the franchise, while diehard supporters continued to make the Expendables rollouts a movie-watching tradition. The Expendables 3 amassed a worldwide cume of $214.7 million, $39.3 million coming from domestic and $175.3 million from international.
